Are you average?

I was perusing the Sunday mags this weekend and came across this article by Mimi Spencer. She writes about some new research that shows us Brits spent an average of £660 on fashion last year. This compares with £417 for Italians and £321 for the French.
Reading that actually did make me think because i spend way over the average. Yes i love shopping but i don't shop in hugely expensive places so it scares me to think what some people spend.
I think some people reading our blogs and seeing what we buy would probably be disgusted but maybe they smoke/gamble/have hobbies which cost just as much. I'm in quite a lucky position as i can afford to spend so much, i have a small overdraft which i am paying off but i don't have any credit cards/store cards and I work full time. Also i have managed on no money in the past and survived without shopping, its not a need for me, its a want.
It does scare me when i see people who buy things just for the sake of it that they are never going to use, I think theres a fine line between enjoying shopping and becoming addicted to the rush it can give you.
Sorry for the ramble, I've gone off from the original topic!!
Did anyone else read the article? Do you spend more then the average?

  1. Yikes - I'm afraid to tally up how much I spend on average per year. It's in the thousands no doubt... but whether I can afford that or not is another (daunting!) question entirely.

  3. This year i've been noting what i've spent each month and im already double over the average spend but then I think I have more of an interest in fashion than the average person! Im like you though I buy what I can afford and of course bills and other things such as holidays come before clothes.

  4. I don't think Fashion as such comes into what you buy, i see lots of Fashion-y/Stylish people who don't have to spend a fortune to look good and most are students so spend well below the national average.

I say i definitely spend more than that on clothes per year. It's all things i want and i know i'll get my wear out, which i've got much better at and don't just buy an outfit nowadays for the sake of it like i used to. I have no debt so fortunately i'm in the position to spend what i like within reason of course, altough i don't just buy for the sake of it and that "rush" you get x

  7. Ditto what Laura said! I'm definitely well over double the 'average' so far this year but work hard, earn a pretty good wage and don't spend more than I can afford to so I'm happy with that.

I can't believe £660 is the average! I probably spend £300 a month... bad times!
